Medway Culture and Design Awards 2008
From the closing ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games this year until the start of the London 2012 Games, the UK will hold a four-year cultural celebration. The Medway Culture and Design Awards form part of Medway's cultural offer as we count down to the 2012 Games.
Building on the success of the Medway Design Awards held in 2006, Medway Culture and Design Awards celebrate the thriving cultural sector in the area and the impact that quality, diverse building and landscape design achievements can have.
The culture categories will provide cultural recognition across the arts, rewarding excellence in:
music,
literature,
visual and performing arts,
new media,
fashion and design,
heritage,
promoting the development of local talented individuals and organisations.
In the design section, we want to know which developments in Medway you think deserve recognition. The developments nominated can be large or small, urban or rural, new buildings or restoration. They could involve the development of commercial, community or residential uses, public space or any mixture of uses.
There is also a special achievements section to celebrate notable accomplishments in any cultural or design field. It includes:
best newcomer,
outstanding achievement,
lifetime contribution,
Medway’s best-kept secret.
An independent panel of judges will assess the entries and the winner will be selected from a shortlist of the strongest entries in each category.
A selection of nominees from across the categories will also be selected for the People’s Choice award, where the public will vote to decide the winner.
The awards ceremony will take place on Thursday, 25 September, where work by some of the shortlisted entrants will be showcased.
Medway Culture and Design Awards 2008 are co-ordinated by Medway Council’s Arts Development Team, its regeneration unit Medway Renaissance and the Medway 2012 Team.
They are supported by a number of organisations, including:
the Medway Messenger (www.kentonline.co.uk/medway);
the South East England Development Agency(www.seeda.co.uk);
Arriva (www.arriva.co.uk).
The closing date for nominations is Monday, 28 April, 2008. Projects or achievements must have taken place between January 2006 and January 2008 to be eligible for the specific cultural and design categories.
People can nominate themselves or other people and projects, so make sure your favourite orchestra, writer, artist, performer, building or sculpture is in contention and download a nomination form today.
