Leading developer selected for Rochester Riverside hotel quarter
Striking images of the future have been released by the company selected to develop the hotel and commercial quarter of flagship regeneration site Rochester Riverside.
Welbeck Land Ltd were approved as ‘preferred developers’ by a meeting of the full council on 26 July 2007.
Concept drawings commissioned by Welbeck Land show a 150-bedroom, four-storey, four-star hotel with 8,500 sq ft of conference space and a sunken courtyard containing the old city wall, providing a physical link between historic Rochester and the new development.
Focal point of the development is an apartment tower with a ‘twisting’ effect running through its spiral design.
Other buildings in the five proposed development blocks would be a mix of homes, business premises, restaurants, pubs and community facilities.
Leader of Medway Council Cllr Rodney Chambers, said: “The selection of Welbeck Land as our preferred developer is an important step in the history of this remarkable site. The current level of interest in Medway from the private sector in general – and hotel operators in particular – is great news for our regeneration programme.”
He added: “The hotel industry is well aware that Medway is a prime growth area, not just for housing and employment, but also a major visitor destination close to London, Ebbsfleet and the Olympics.”
SEEDA (the South East England Development Agency) are the council’s project partners on Rochester Riverside. SEEDA project director Jonathan Sadler, said: “The ambitions for Rochester Riverside are of the highest order. Those ambitions are shared by Welbeck Land. Their selection as preferred developers is excellent news.”
Across Medway, hotel operators are now poised to check in with 500 rooms across at least five sites, investing an estimated £50million.
It’s being hailed as a massive vote of confidence in the 15-year, £1 billion regeneration programme that’s set to turn Medway into the thriving new river city of the Thames Gateway.
First of the new hotels is the 90-bedroom Ramada Encore now under construction Chatham Maritime. It’s due to open in November.
Plans have also been submitted for an 84-bedroom budget hotel on a site in Corporation Street, Rochester. There’s strong interest in opening a four-star hotel on a prime waterfront site in Chatham. And 65 bedrooms are proposed on another site.
Additionally, there’s the potential to create a number of small, luxury ‘boutique’ hotels in and around buildings of historical interest.
