Five new hotels for Medway

Hotel operators are poised to check in to Medway with 500 rooms across at least five sites, investing an estimated £50million.

It’s being hailed as a massive vote of confidence in the 15-year, £1billion regeneration programme that’s set to turn Medway into a thriving new river city.

First of the new hotels is the 90-bedroom Ramada Encore at Chatham Maritime (pictured). It’s under construction and due to open in November. But that’s just the start…

Next month, a preferred hotel developer will be chosen for a prime site near Rochester Bridge on the flagship Rochester Riverside regeneration site. The aim is a four-star 150-200 bedroom hotel with conference facilities, to open in time for the 2012 London Olympics.

Plans have been submitted for an 84-bedroom budget hotel on a site in Corporation Street, Rochester.

There’s strong interest in opening a four-star hotel on a prime waterfront site in Chatham.

Up to 65 bedrooms are proposed on a fifth site.

Additionally, there’s the potential to create a number of small, luxury ‘boutique’ hotels in and around buildings of historical interest.

And longer term, the regeneration of the Chatham Waterfront site - running between Sun Pier and the Command House pub - is expected to include what may be Medway’s biggest hotel.

Leader of Medway Council Cllr Rodney Chambers said: “Some of the proposals are at an early stage and commercially sensitive, so we can’t yet go public with the details. But this level of interest in Medway from hotel operators is most encouraging.

“It’s further evidence of strong private sector enthusiasm for our regeneration programme. The hotel industry is well aware that Medway is a prime growth area, not just for housing and employment, but also a major visitor destination close to London, Ebbsfleet and the Olympics.”
